What to Do If You Notice a Wasps’ Nest on Your Property?

Wasps are considered one of the most common pests found in and around the Canadian home. But if they build a nest within the property, they can have a lasting impact on those living in the area. It’s important to take a proactive approach to removing wasp nests around your home. In this latest post, we’ll provide our guide on what to do if you notice a wasps’ nest on your property.

Use Plain Soap and Water to Spray Nests

Soap and water can often be used to clog the pores within smaller nests, causing the wasps inside to die instantly. This then makes the removal of the nest simpler. Start by filling a spray bottle with water and then add two tablespoons of dish soap. When spraying the nest, try to stand at least two feet away and make sure you’re wearing high-coverage clothing to protect against potential stings.

You can use a hose to remove a larger nest. Attach the sprayer and then fill it up with two tablespoons of soap to begin the spraying process. This can be a messier way of dealing with the issue, so make sure you don’t have furniture or other high value items in the area

Use Smoke

Wasps will react immediately to smoke in the area of their nest. And so, one of the best ways to remove wasps from a property and ensure they abandon their nest is to light a small fire underneath. Use your home barbeque or build a simple fire underneath the wasp’s nest and allow smoke to drift upwards for an hour while you control the heat. After an hour, you should be able to remove the nest easily as all the wasps will have flown away. However, it’s a good idea to keep a spray bottle of soap and water on-hand to respond to those one or two wasps that can remain in the area.

If you’ve tried both the spraying method and the smoking method of wasp removal without success, it’s time to call a professional.
